Ein kurzes Lebensbild von Caroline Pereira, einer Frau, deren Liebe den Armen und Notleidenden gehört
Seit mehr als 40 Jahren bin ich mit Caroline Elelwani Mugivhi befreundet. Als Jugendliche kam sie zu den grossen Jugendfreizeiten, die ich an verschiedenen Stellen im Vendaland, Nord Transvaal (heute Limpopo Province) veranstaltete.
Da erwachte in ihr der Wunsch, einen ähnlichen Beruf wie ich zu ergreifen, denn sie spürte, wie es das Leben der Menschen verändert, wenn sie von der Liebe Gottes hören und davon erfasst werden.
Damals war es noch nicht möglich, dass afrikanische junge Frauen als Pastorinnen ausgebildet wurden, aber der Wunsch blieb immer in ihr wach, auch als sie zunächst nach dem Matric eine Lehrerinnenausbildung machte, um schnell etwas zu verdienen. Sie sollte mithelfen, dass auch die jüngeren Geschwister eine Ausbildung bekommen.
Caroline empfand während ihrer eigenen Ausbildung, dass ihr Herzenswunsch sich zu einer inneren Berufung verdichtete. Schliesslich sprach sie mit ihrem Bischof darüber. Er empfahl ihr ein Theologiestudium in Umpumulo, Natal. Dort war eine ev.-lutherische Theologische Hochschule. Aber ihre Familie war dagegen. Caroline blieb still. Sie wollte sehen, wie Gott sein Versprechen einlöst, dass er die Berufung bestätigte. Die Familie beriet lange, ob sie wirklich diesen Weg gehen dürfe, ohne einen Beitrag für die jüngeren Geschwister zu leisten. Schliesslich bat der Vater die Mutter, sie möge sich auch dazu äussern. Sie hatte bis dahin noch nichts gesagt.
Nach dem Bericht von Gesche Keding in Mitteilen Nr. 4 / 2005 S.IV erzählte Caroline ihr, worin sie ihre Berufung bestätigt sah: Die Mutter sagte:
Wenn ich noch so jung wäre wie Caroline, würde ich selbst nach Umpumulo gehen, um mehr über das Wort Gottes zu hören.
Daraufhin sagte der Vater:
Ja – sie ist nicht meine Tochter, sie ist Kind Gottes. Ich gebe sie frei zu tun, was ihr Vater im Himmel will.
An dem Tag hat Caroline zu Gott gesagt, dass er ihr nie mehr ihre Berufung beweisen müsse. 1977 ging sie nach Umpumulo.
Bei ihrer Ordination vor 24 Jahren war ich mit dabei und sprach ein Grusswort für sie in der vollen Kirche. Sie ist eine der ersten Pastorinnen in der ELCSA (Ev.Luth. Kirche im Südlichen Afrika). Später hat sie Pastor Richard Pereira geheiratet und wurde von Venda nach Mpumalanga an die Grenze nach Swasiland versetzt. Sie leitet heute mehrere Gemeinden in der weitverzweigten Barberton Parish.

Der folgende Brief von ihr mag als eindrückliches Beispiel dafür stehen, wie die Gaben der Spender des Förderkreises in einem konkreten Fall vielseitig und sorgsam eingesetzt werden.

My dear Hanna,
Allow me to greet you with the words from Isaiah 9,2 which says:
The people waiting in darkness have seen a great light, on those living in the land of shadow of death a light has dawned.
I thank God who has sent you to Africa 50 years ago. You have proclaimed the Good News which liberates us from sin. I thank God that I am one of those who were touched by the loving hand of God through your ministry.
I am also thankful to God that He is sending me to His children young and old. I hear Him sending me to the poor of the poorest, to the neglected and unloved in our society.
I thank God that you are supporting me to reach as many needy people as possible. My ministry in Barberton Parish is a blessing because of your prayers and support. Indeed “Lufuno lwa Mudzimu ndi luhulu, ndi luhulu kha nne.” (the love of God is great to me).
I am happy you have received the photos of the orphans and needy children from Zone leader Mr. Moses Nkosi. The Zone leader’s family is taking care of those children since they stay without parents. The Zone leader together with the pastor take care by home visitation. They encourage these children to join church activities. If they have problems with school fees, food in their family or money to join youth conference, even for school uniforms, they reported to the one leader and his wife. Then the Zone leader reported to the congregation and pastor. All those children are receiving help from your donations every time you send us money.
There are so many children who are without parents, we fail to help them all. At the beginning of this year we tried to ask our diocese for bursaries for them but till now there is no response. But the children need school fees, uniforms and some text books.
We focus on fighting the scourge of HIV/AIDS. We have discovered that so many people who are affected and infected have no food, no proper diet, as a result their immune system is affected.
I think we need to support those who want to start some income generating project so that they continue helping themselves and others since the need is too much.

- R 790.— for Matsulu Creche (Day Care Centre)
- R 1000.— to the orphans (Zone leader Mr. Nkosi)
- R 1000.— Low’s Creek farm women for food parcel and their children’s schooling
- R 1000.— Mpumalanga Home Based Care
- R 710.— income generating project, sewing project
Thank you for praying for us during Women’s World Day of Prayer. Poverty, HIV/AIDS, child headed family, single mothers who cannot support their family, and education of the vulnerable children is a problem.
Hanna, thank you once more for your support. I am now going to Barberton from where we received the message of the death of a congregational leader.
